Hotaru Tachibana has a strong sense of justice and just cannot help confronting those who choose to perform malicious acts. Furthermore, Hotaru is actually a girl who likes to disguise herself as a boy. After hearing rumors that her best friend was tricked by the popular host of a local club, Hotaru seeks to punish the evildoer. Upon arriving at the club, however, she is challenged to a so-called “survival game” by the host Masamune Matsuoka, where the first person hit by the bullet of a toy gun will lose.
After a destructive fight which results in Hotaru’s loss, Masamune forces the young “boy” to join his survival game team named Toy Gun Gun, in order to repay the cost of the damages that “he” has caused inside the club. Although she is initially unhappy with this turn of events, Hotaru quickly begins to enjoy what survival games have to offer and is determined to pay off her debt, much to the dismay of Tooru Yukimura, the other member of Toy Gun Gun. As time goes on, Hotaru begins to develop a close friendship with the rest of the team and hopes to take part in realizing their dream of winning the Top Combat Game (TCG), a tournament to decide the best survival game team in Japan.
Although Hotaru tries her best, there are just two little problems: she is absolutely terrible at the game, and Toy Gun Gun doesn’t allow female members on their team! – My Anime List

Based off the first episode, this feel a lot like Ouran High School Host Club, right down to the general plot, with some elements of Sabagebu-Survival Game Club elements thrown into it. The humor seems pretty good so far and it has certainly gotten my attention. I’ll be keeping an eyes on this one.
Aoharu X Machinegun is a fun series that leaves you wishing you had friends like that. Of course this is anime and the real world might have been much more cruel. I think the one thing that held me back on the series is the inability to open the story up for a deeper connection between the trio.
If you are looking for a series that is just fun to watch and takes an older plot device and gives you something you didn’t expect then Aoharu X Machingun is for you.
I enjoyed watching it and I’m dying for the next episode to come out. I couldn’t take my eyes off of the screen for five whole episodes, partly because I had to read the subtitles, but also because it was interesting. Then again, I enjoy gender bender shows and there is actually some action in this one. It’s not all action, but survival games is more action than a host club. People are shooting at each other, even if the bullets are fake. As for those thinking this is a reverse harem or will be, it’s not impossible, but in my opinion, it doesn’t feel like one.

Aoharu X Machinegun is one heartfelt, nicely action-packed, and often funny anime series, the kind of show that may spark more interest in the Airsoft community on both sides of the Pacific. It may not have been the show that I was promised by my comrades, but its character development and storytelling has me hooked to witness the action that takes place on the battlefield. If you’re looking for an alternative sports anime with a dash of danger thrown in for good measure, then Aoharu X Machinegun will certainly be up your alley. Just make sure to bring your protective eyewear.

The only other downside is that, so far, this is only a 12 episode series and it definitely leaves you wanting to see more. So I really hope there is more to come because, given the shortness of this season, there is a lot of unexplored territory and you get the feeling that Tachibana has only reached a fraction of her real potential. If you want to see an action based show, or just want to see really interesting characters, I definitely recommend this show! I would say that out of the summer anime releases, this one might be my favorite as I thoroughly looked forward to seeing each new episode.
In the end, Aoharu x Machinegun wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, and I’ll admit that’s damning it with faint praise. It’s a solidly put together series that achieves what it wants to do and it has some good survival game sequences and it avoids some of the usual pitfalls that it introduces as the base concepts. It’s well animated and has some great detail in addition to appealing character designs that will delight certain fanbases. I also love that Sentai picked this title to dub because of the numbers they were seeing elsewhere, which means this show did better than a lot of people expected as a popular under the radar work and that makes it worth checking out a bit more. Fans of the series and the genre will find a lot to like here as Sentai put out a quality release that’s problem free. It’s something worth taking a peek at to be sure, though you may want to give it a few episodes as that first one is rough.

So with all that said, is there anything good thing about this show? Well if there’s one thing it’d be that despite everything it at least isn’t boring. Incredibly annoying yes, but twenty minutes of Aoharu x Kikanjuu per week was not really a problem. It’s kind of like watching a very low level football game; even if the content itself is lackluster, you can still probably find some enjoyment in it just by being a football fan to begin with. In the same way, despite the cringeworthy execution, Aoharu x Kikanjuu is so far the only anime I’ve ever seen about airsoft, so it gets some plus points for originality and for having a fun concept at least. But even with that taken into account it doesn’t change the fact that it is still a very sub-par anime at best, and not one I would particularly recommend to very many people.
Anime News Network
A surprisingly clever and fun first outing for a show with a tough, but naive young lady just starting to strike out into adulthood, who has essentially been tricked into starting a hobby she had no interest in before, but may help further her overarching desire to become a better hero of justice, both in terms of combat skills and people skills. I’ll keep watching for now.
A lot of action, lot of comedy, slow and fast paces and best of all the addiction to Survival Gun Games. New genre for me. Recommend this to those who liked Maid-sama. A prism of personalities in its charas make this whole for me.
A show that feels rather unpredictable from these first few episodes, but certainly boasts potential for what will follow.
Aoharu x Kikanjuu misrepresents itself with its opening episodes. It seems like it’s going to be about BB gun mayhem, but it’s actually all about melodramatic friendship, abandonment issues, and struggles forming and keeping relationships. For people looking for character drama, even if a bit forced and melodramatic, Aoharu might be something to check out, but if you’re looking for a hardcore Airsoft anime, Aoharu just won’t deliver. Seems to be a curse with the Airsoft genre, either it gets melodramatic or it’s all comedy.
