During the early 1930s in Chicago, the transcontinental train, Flying Pussyfoot, is starting its legendary journey that will leave a trail of blood all over the country. At the same time in New York, the ambitious scientist Szilard and his unwilling aide Ennis are looking for missing bottles of the immortality elixir. In addition, a war between the mafia groups is getting worse. On board the Advena Avis, in 1711, alchemists are about to learn the price of immortality.
Based on the award-winning light novels of the same name, Baccano! follows several events that initially seem unrelated, both in time and place, but are part of a much bigger story—one of alchemy, survival and immortality. Merging these events together are the kindhearted would-be thieves, Isaac and Miria, connecting various people, all of them with their own hidden ambitions and agendas, and creating lifelong bonds and consequences for everyone involved. – My Anime List
Based on 36 review scores:
You’d expect a series mostly set in the Great Depression with so much violence and danger to be…depressing, but in the end, it’s a joy to watch. It’s a suspenseful series with such a large cast that it feels like no one is armed with plot armor-no one, even the “immortals,” are guaranteed to come out of this insanity alive. There is a palpable feeling of danger. And when it wraps up, even with a few threads left dangling, some justice has been served, and even better, some characters find love. While the series ends on an epilogue that feels a bit flat, it left me with the best possible feeling: a mixture of contentment and a hunger to see more.

For me, a perfect score is given to an anime with strong technical aspects like story, characters and animation but it’s also one of a kind. It’s rare, and you’ll never see anything like it for as long as you live. What the anime accomplished is something no other show can do, and I believe Baccano has met this criteria. It’s a rare anime, and the show delivers an anime experience so special that everyone should simply try it. Baccano has a simple story told in such an incredible fashion that you’ll be glued to your screen to see it unfold and unfold. The characters aren’t just interesting by their own, but their also incredibly memorable. The anime experience is something you will never get out of any other anime as well. With that, I’ll simply say that this anime is something I highly recommend.
This anime is amazing. It’s got horror, action, mystery, and even a bit of romance. The sound track will rock you to you’re bones. You’ll not be let down by the enjoyable characters, unbelievable animation, or unreal soundtrack. Not to mention it’s confusing yet unbelievable plot. It also has probably the best openings of all time. I should also mention this show contains two characters that were put on my top 5 lists. This show will keep you gripped and is probably the best you’ll ever see. So put down your shitty Naruto and One Piece cosplays and your Bleach smut (wow three in one blow[blow, lol]) and come check out this 50/50 anime. Why are you still reading? GO WATCH IT!
With so many characters and storylines, Baccano! could have been a bit of a train wreck (second awesome train pun), but instead it demonstrates the incredible results of uninhibited ambition and talent. Everything about the show is incredible, it’s so good that I can only really comprehend how amazing it really is whilst I’m watching it. If I could always recall just how unbelievably awesome it is, I think my brain just might explode. As well as an amazing atmosphere and sense of character, Baccano!’s storyline has around four or five truly jaw dropping moments I cant even begin to mention because of the spoilers. Overall is Baccano! my favourite anime of all time? Yes. It comes highly recommended.
Beta Is Dead
Baccano! is awesome! This anime has everything: action, drama, strong characters, good visuals, and great acting. No body of work is perfect so there are some annoying things here and there but at the end of the day they don’t matter. This is one of the best anime ever made. It has skyrocketed to the top of my favorite series list. Although I was clearly a big fan of Eden of the East and Darker than Black neither of those show, fantastic as they may have been, had that special something that I look for in shows I love without condition. But Baccono! does. I have been trying to limit the amount I say about the show itself because this one of those times you want to go into it knowing as little as possible. At the risk of giving too much away this show is basically Pulp Fiction meets Highlander set in Prohibition Era New York. If that doesn’t sound insanely awesome to you then I feel extremely bad for the half-life you live. For everyone else I highly, highly recommend this show. Watch it twice.
In all, Baccano! is a lot of different things all at once, and that’s one of the reasons it’s so special. Nothing else puts together the back-to-back combination of hilarious situation comedy, merciless violence, rip-roaring adventure, brooding tragedy, and all-around entertainment that Baccano! maintains from the first scene to the post-credits parting shot. Trust me when I say taking the time to let it get going is worth your while–put simply, shows like this are why you own a TV.
I was first watching the early episodes of Bacanno! and I do what I always do when I watch a new anime I have a checklist in my head and I rate the anime as it opens up. At the begginning I did not think much of it because I thought the plot was confusing. But slowly, every so slowly, Bacanno! started to really appeal to me, was it that an anime was set in the united states that actually looked cool? Actually Baccano! resembles Cowboy Bebop quite alot and well know that anime is a masterpiece. And when I think back Bacanno! really ticked all the right boxes, it had a fantastic plotline properly explored in only 13 episodes, a huge cast of unique and creative characters, with a great jazz musical opening that got you into the mood of things! Truly this anime is one of the most underrated animes of the past decade, there is no doubt that this is a masterpiece.
With great animation, great characters and a cracking sound track, you will cheer for these characters whether they be villain or victim, but which is which?
This is a must for the over eighteens.
Baccano! is one of the finest anime shows I’ve ever seen and, although I freely admit that that list is pretty short, it is up at the top by quite some distance. It really has a sense of the epic and is more like a feature film in scope with some elements reminding me of Sergio Leone’s sublime gangster film Once upon a Time in America although with a supernatural element. If you haven’t yet bought the American release, then this is really the one to add to your collection as it is the sort of show that you will watch until the end and then decide to start all over again, knowing little bit more about each character and how they all interact and fit together over the three-year timescale.
All in all, there aren’t really any bad things to say about Baccano! Sure, the anachronic order of the first episode is a little confusing, and characters like Chane and Lua get barely any screentime, but these issues seem more like slight niggles than major problems when you’re confronted with such an engaging storyline and colourful cast.
Baccano is an amazing anime for something produced in 2007, which can still be compared to today’s standards as it really is one of the best drama, supernatural, gangster anime ever. The story is incredibly captivating, the characters are charming, lovable and extremely interesting and the unique way it tells its story makes it intriguing and encourages you to re-watch it over and over again to catch all the tiny little details you missed the first time around. Overall, an extremely enjoyable experience as the show spared no expense in its production values from the animation to the sound and music to the voice acting. Absolutely amazing.
The Top Tens
Soundtrack, animation, story and characters all round up make this to an anime masterpiece you have to watch!
Baccano was a hard show to watch the first time around when it was broken up, but it had some wonderful moments that made it stand out. Taking it in as a whole show over the course of a day, it’s an impressive work that really ties so many things together in a way that’s exhilarating to see unfold. Baccano is one of those shows that you really have to work at to get the most out of it. It’s not exactly complex, it just has a lot of storylines running through it that weave back and forth in one time period but also jumps to others as well to flesh out certain elements. I could have done without the three epilogue episodes that deals with events after the train arrives in New York City, but it has its merits and does give clue as to how certain things are resolved and can go. Baccano as a whole here is a great work that I can’t recommend enough, but it’s not fluff. It’s something much more and the payoff for it is the best. Highly recommended.
All in all, Baccano was very enjoyable. It is a little violent and gory so it might not be for everyone. But definitely worth giving a shot if you don’t mind or even like the action.
Another rarity is me giving a series an A, but Baccano deserves it and deserves to be better known in the anime world. It is a hidden gem in a sea of mediocre titles and really needs to be discovered by you. In fact, you can watch the series as of this writing on Youtube, either dubbed or subbed, so there is no excuse in not at least checking the series out.
While a did enjoy watching all of the characters go about solving their issues the main issue I had was that Baccano had me out of the loop for a good three episodes before I started piecing the plot together. Despite that I enjoyed viewing something that was vastly different to most of the anime I usually watch in both story telling and in character relationships.
The Anime Review
Baccano! may not be to everyone’s taste; a lack of straightforward heroes and a whole lot of villains, combined with a supply of gore that would make George Romero queasy and a plot that takes effort to understand, will chase away some. Yet I haven’t seen something quite this thrilling in a long time. If you’ve got the iron constitution and a mind that craves quality anime that’s more than a simple time-waster, you’ve got the right show to put in your queue.
Baccano! is a wonderful anime, and a classic. And no, it’s not just me baselessly claiming that just because it’s one of my top favorite anime series. Every time I go to a store or vendor, Baccano is always there and is one of the first to sell out. Everyone I’ve ever talked to about it at least likes the series, if not seriously adores it. If you absolutely can’t stand violence, it’s possible for you to get uncomfortable with this anime, and maybe even say it’s not your thing, but…even people who get squeamish with this kind of thing have to admit this is good series, I think. It’s wonderful and a must watch for any anime fan or even just any fan of entertainment all together. If you haven’t seen it, take the time to do so! You won’t regret it! If you do, you can come back and tell me all about how I lied. But I seriously doubt that will happen.
A challenging but ultimately highly rewarding viewing experience. Anime Limited have provided the definitive way to view this classic series.
The Forgotten Lair
The story may be hard to follow at first, but after you’ve met all the key characters, things really go full throttle with this story. Each character is unique and colorful and I was even surprised at how much I loved the bubbly characters that linked them all together. I thought I’d hate their aggressively outgoing personality, but they nearly put me to tears at the end with all their actions. A great series with lots of mystery, psychotic people and blood. Did I mention the blood?
Overall this is an extremely great series, I would recommend it to anyone and it is my number one anime of the past decade
J And J Productions
If fast paced action, violence, and humor is your thing and you are new to anime, Baccano is a great place to start. If you are already a fan of the medium, what are you waiting for? Watch Baccano!
Baccano goes over the top and succeeds. It is an extravaganza of slapstick, silliness, the supernatural, horror, violence — everything to be expected from Japan but taken to a surprising degree (and it works). With so many characters and so much happening, the story can be overwhelming but it is, nonetheless, a great ride.
Baccano! is a series with definitive class and style that is unique to most anime series in the present year, and one that I think many will enjoy for those factors. I would say it’s among the strongest I’ve seen in it’s respective action/period genre, yet there were some holes and characterization parts of the series that I felt weren’t as strong as they could have been. There’s a potential of depth this series could have achieved both with its storyline and even with the chance of “playing around” more with the period elements. Yet, I enjoyed this on quite many levels, and would recommend it. I definitely hope there’s a second season to this, if the award-winning manga is any indication.
My Anime List
Baccano! is one of the rarest types of anime as it successfully merges comedy, suspense, action and even a little romance, without sacrificing animation or sound quality. It is a gem that will appeal to fans of many different genres and it is one of the few animes that can be watched again and again without suffering any loss of enjoyment.
The writing alone of this show is something to nod your head at. How several stories, that could all stand alone with their depth, somehow manage to get intertwined into one big gangster cornucopia is beyond me. The story does have a bit of hocus-pocus to it but don’t feel like they are short changing you. Being immortal isn’t what it’s all cooked up to be. If you watch this show in subtitles you are doing yourself and the whole world a HUGE disservice. These are Italian mafia in New York. With Italian and New York accents. Anything else would kill the whole experience. Don’t watch the sub. There is no such thing as the sub. There is only the dub. Anything else is a lie (probably from the government).
At first it’s difficult to follow because of the anachronistic order and sheer loads of characters, but as you get used to the pacing and familiar with the faces, the pieces begin to fit together. The storytelling is genius, and the reveals are a lot more rewarding exposed in this way than if time were shown sequentially.
“Cool” is probably the most appropriate word to describe Baccano! The slick animation and the catchy music only adds to the overall sexiness of the show. If you want a dash of style and a pinch of epic this season, pick up this anime. There’s comedy; there’s drama. There’s action; there’s romance. All you need now is popcorn and soda.
Peculiar, quirky and oddly addictive. If you’re ready for some supernatural viewing (pun intended) then Baccano! is begging to be added to your ‘watching’ list. Consider heeding its call.
Anime Reviewer Girl
I did get so confused at the beginning with all the different characters and scenes. But if you haven’t seen this show yet you should definitely check it out.
Even with its cluttered narrative, Baccano delivers, brilliantly wrapping itself up in a finale that is chaotic, disorienting and unquestionably satisfying. Strap yourselves in, ’cause this bumpy ride makes an offer you can’t refuse.
Robot Eye Theater
Baccano! is great fun and well worth the purchase price for the DVD collection, even if you are not an anime fan check it out.
So it can seem random and inconsistent, but as for what I like about it? It’s entertaining. You will laugh. You will jump out of your seat. You will inhale popcorn. You will yell at your laptop at 3 in the goddamn morning. It’s a fun, interesting, and above all, immersing show. And it’s nice to see a little innovation in the way stories are told now and then. Baccano! changes things up by telling a story in an unconventional way.
Tam And Eggs
I give kudos to the anime for being able to explain what simply happened through a number of amazing but less diversified POVs, but the questions of what is really going on and why these events happen still remains.
