Black Butler (Season 1)

(Last Updated On: January 4, 2017)

Young Ciel Phantomhive is known as “the Queen’s Guard Dog,” taking care of the many unsettling events that occur in Victorian England for Her Majesty. Aided by Sebastian Michaelis, his loyal butler with seemingly inhuman abilities, Ciel uses whatever means necessary to get the job done. But is there more to this black-clad butler than meets the eye?

In Ciel’s past lies a secret tragedy that enveloped him in perennial darkness—during one of his bleakest moments, he formed a contract with Sebastian, a demon, bargaining his soul in exchange for vengeance upon those who wronged him. Today, not only is Sebastian one hell of a butler, but he is also the perfect servant to carry out his master’s orders—all the while anticipating the delicious meal he will eventually make of Ciel’s soul. As the two work to unravel the mystery behind Ciel’s chain of misfortunes, a bond forms between them that neither heaven nor hell can tear apart. – My Anime List

Black Butler was the first anime I watched, which was two years ago. It was the anime that compelled me to watch more until I was completely obsessed. Because of the dark themes, blood, and mature content, it may not be the best anime for all beginners, but if you are into that kind of thing then it’s a great one to watch. The storyline is extremely interesting and makes you think differently about angels and demons; which one represents good and which one represents evil? I found nothing wrong with the animation itself, and the voice acting was as good as any other anime. I did really like that not everyone was drawn in the obvious anime style all the time; take Tanaka for example (if you don’t know who he is, you will, and you’ll love him). Black Butler is an anime that you won’t want to stop watching until you’ve finished it. Just as Sebastian says, “I’m simply one hell of a butler,” I have to say that this is “simply one hell of an anime”.

Black Butler is a great mix of Gothic, horror, and comedy. It’s atmosphere, frightening, exciting, and wickedly funny. It also ended perfectly: so much so that I have no interest in following the series after this collection. Dr. Josh gives this an…

Although some of the show has now been disregarded as ‘non canon’ I’d really recommend all of Black Butler. At times it’s far from perfect, but has a couple of qualities that made me more than willing to overlook its flaws. First there’s the characters, and it’s because of them that the show leaves such an impression. Secondly there’s the fact that it’s so enjoyable to watch. Black Butler is pure entertainment, and one hell of an anime.

By the time the contract is fulfilled, Black Butler is a lovely little blend of dark mystery with comedic moments that know how to keep the balance and the viewer entertained. The story is wonderful, the characters are a delight, and J. Michael Tatum is standing firmly high on my favorite voice actors list. This series is more catered to a female audience, so ladies have at it! Though male audiences may appreciate what this series has to offer as well.

Although I wouldn’t necessarily say it put the ‘shit’ in ‘Kuroshitsuji’ neither would I say this is a spectacular watch. This series was just ‘okay’ to me, it wasn’t particularly special and it’s quite tedious. I have had many unanswered questions formed in my mind and quite a few qualms about it. For those of you who actually read manga I suggest doing so first or instead of watching this since it just contains the main story and does not sell itself short with fan-pandering nonsense.

Anyways, the series themes of revenge and redemption are woven together well with well-crafted story lines. This isn’t an anime with non-stop action, but it does have its share of dark supernatural battle scenes, as well as witty humorous battle scenes. There is quite a bit dark humor in different parts of the series, but it’s balanced out by traditional anime slapstick comedy (which I’m actually not a fan of and part of the reason it didn’t get 10 stars).

The anime is good and I do recommend seeing it, but I’d watch the anime series before actually purchasing the dvds or blu ray. If you really love it after watching it then go for it, spend more money, but if not, then don’t worry about it. It is an anime worth taking a look at as long as you aren’t incredibly squirmy towards possible Yaoi situations, but I wouldn’t outright buy the anime until you are certain you are going to love it. It is good, but not exactly up there with the greats.

With its combination the Gothic Lolita aesthetic with a revenge plot set out in a decadent, romanticized version of Victorian England, Black Butler takes rather disparate thematic threads and weaves together something that is certainly a unique viewing experience. Thus, while Black Butler is a bit of a hard-sell–since it’s not necessarily grim-dark, but not necessarily light-hearted–I think it’s a series that is worthy to check out.

Black Butler despite some flaws is overall is a great show to watch. If you like supernatural shows, 1800’s England, and handsome characters then Black Butler will promise you on that. Best try to ignore the subtext between the two main leads though. But then again it’s all up to interpertation.

I am hooked on this anime right now. I love everything about it from Grell’s obsessive love for Sebastian to the Phantomhive servant fails. This is one of the best animes I have ever seen.

This show isn’t boring. But it’s not interesting either. It’s just good looking. I suppose it’s the equivalent of a very mild ecchi anime, just aimed for a different audience. Just like those shows doesn’t have much more to offer than a pair of boobs flashing every scene, Kuroshitsuji doesn’t offer much more than pretty boys flashing every scene. If you need a large dose of bishounen go ahead, this show is for you. If not, I suggest passing on this, since it’s just not worth the time.

This first half of the anime series that’s become a massive fan-favorite is uneven, sporting a curious mix of goofy humor and blood-curdling dread. That said, most fans of Black Butler, and specifically, its swoon-worthy titular butler, will readily forgive such problems and is worth checking out for fans of this genre.
