Supersonic monkeys, vampires, talking fishmen, and all sorts of different supernatural monsters living alongside humans—this has been part of daily life in Hellsalem’s Lot, formerly known as New York City, for some time now. When a gateway between Earth and the Beyond opened three years ago, New Yorkers and creatures from the other dimension alike were trapped in an impenetrable bubble and were forced to live together. Libra is a secret organization composed of eccentrics and superhumans, tasked with keeping order in the city and making sure that chaos doesn’t spread to the rest of the world.
Pursuing photography as a hobby, Leonardo Watch is living a normal life with his parents and sister. But when he obtains the “All-seeing Eyes of the Gods” at the expense of his sister’s eyesight, he goes to Hellsalem’s Lot in order to help her by finding answers about the mysterious powers he received. He soon runs into Libra, and when Leo unexpectedly joins their ranks, he gets more than what he bargained for. Kekkai Sensen follows Leo’s misadventures in the strangest place on Earth with his equally strange comrades—as the ordinary boy unwittingly sees his life take a turn for the extraordinary. – My Anime List

It’s a party that we’re all invited to. There’s nothing quite like it that has come out this year, and as of right now, it’s on a fast track to being one of my favorite anime of all time. Hands down, this is probably going to be my favorite anime of the year unless any show this season can top this, but I don’t feel like there’s any hope of that happening. More than any other show, movie, or video I’ve talked about recently, you cannot contain the sheer love that I feel for this series. Stream it. Watch it. Import it from Japan. I don’t care how you do it, but you NEED Blood Blockade Battlefront if your life. Take the word of a self-proclaimed cynical critic, this is the real deal. This is one of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen in my life. Give it all of the love it deserves.
Overall, Kekkai Sensen is a tremendous series. It’s smart, funny, action-packed and also builds in a surprising amount of heart and emotion.
I love Blood Blockade Battlefront. It’s easily my favourite anime series of 2015, and in fact it’s one of my favourite anime series, full stop. It’s bursting with humour, action and emotion, and it’s so beautifully presented that I didn’t want to look away from the screen for even a second. The only problem that I have with it is that it’s far too short. Even though the anime covers the first six volumes of the manga, it only adapts half of the stories featured in those volumes. There’s so much potential for a second season, and I really, really hope we get one.
Blood Blockade Battlefront is a complicated weave of story, visuals and sounds that culminates in a near overwhelming experience. Often points there is so much occurring on screen that a human being could not possibly observe it all and the world itself can appear so spontaneous and haphazard that it is difficult to even tread metaphorical water.
Blood Blockade Battlefront uses unique anime art stylings, creating outlandish creatures to counter the humans of the series (whilst providing exceptional designs as well). Every character’s mood or personality can be determined by the series’ visuals, often reminding me of a cinematic experience. Black and White were both interestingly created to show similarities yet differentiates enough to be viewed as separate entities (especially Black…).
Anime News Network
There’s a whole lot of fun to be had with Blood Blockade Battlefront – the show is brimming with artistry and energy, full of creative fantasy worldbuilding and dizzy storytelling spectacle.
BBB is a rush a minute, with high impact action, some comedy, tragedy and by the end, a surprising conclusion. With such an episodic nature, you may have wished there was more to the story at the end instead of the job of the day episodes. That said, without those episodes you wouldn’t have got a lot of the fun and sad moments, combined with glimpses of the true characters (which sadly don’t get fleshed out enough due to the length and nature of the series) and Leo developing quite well despite suffering from his lack of action, it is definitely a unique show and not one you should pass on despite the nature.
It just feels like, “look at these awesome super powers!”. But the actual story has nowhere near the same amount of thought put into it.
Gore, filler, and short episode count aside Blood Blockade Battlefront is an ok to good shounen series. The art direction and style is perhaps its biggest draw, though that isn’t to take anything away from the series overall.
In many ways the large cast and fast paced narrative draws comparison to Baccano! – one of the greatest anime there is. But whilst Bacanno! works well as a serial (despite adapting only a small portion of its source material), Blood Blockade Battlefront feels like it’s only just getting started. The manga is still going and I’ve no doubt the anime will continue as well. It’s been great so far, but I want more.
Blood Blockade Battlefront admittedly caught me by surprise and whilst its episodic nature means it’s not so easy to binge watch, it does work in its favour and eventually everything comes together by the end. News of a second season makes me happy and I’m eager to see more of the Libra team back in action, and I’m interested in what the author and Bones have planned next for the series.
It’s witty and it’s innovative with smash you in the face graphics and whiplash action. Blood Blockade Battlefront is a cool series from a group of creators with A-list bona fides.
I was very sceptical with this story, but it really surpised me that it turned out like this. In conclusion, nicely done story with a decent amount of comedy and episodic storytelling.

This show is a marvel. Never in so long have I seen a new series be so eccentric and unique.
It’s truly a gem, and I hope that other people can realize this as well.
Kekkai Sensen is in my view a very funny, and down to earth series with blends of the strange, mixing with unknown elements to give rise to a new cult classic. I hope in the future they do make a movie from the series cause it would be a thrill ride then.
Blood Blockade Battlefront holds absolutely nothing back with its visual vibrancy and wildly-entertaining cast, but I can’t help but feel like its undercooked and underexplained plot could have been hammered out into something amazing instead of weighing the series down.
It’s a show that thinks that as long as it looks cool, it doesn’t have to actually try. Well it’s right, given its popularity. But that won’t stop this reviewer from calling it out on its fundamental failures.
