I watched the original Hajime No Ippo and it was one of those great animes from back in the day so I didn’t expect any less from the new anime series, but I was wrong. This new one blew it out of the water, I haven’t seen a well written anime like this in a long time. The characters were hilarious, you get caught up with the story, the style of anime fits it so perfectly, the episodes are short and sweet. I had to watch the episodes in bunches with a few late nights because I just had to continue the fight. There were parts when I was laughing so hard, and you get emotional with the characters, you know its an excellent anime when you really get caught up with it.

All in all, Hajime no Ippo New Challenger proves two things. One, that Hajime no Ippo definitely still has a place in the modern Anime landscape, and can actually benefit from the advancements in technology. Two, that anime series today need to look back to the great work from a few years back, and focus on longer and more gradually built up stories. While it won’t satisfy you the way the first series did, Hajime no Ippo New Challenger is a worthy second series in the Hajime no Ippo legacy. Here’s hoping the story continues in animated form some day, with a third series.

Solid improvement on the core of the story from the first Hajime no Ippo series means that New Challenger is a must-see for all fans of the original series and could possibly be a reason why I would recommend others to this series. Good comedy, good cast, good development, and good variety equals a good anime.

So yeah, Hajime no Ippo stands out in its simplicity; for every arc you know exactly what you’re going to get: an incredibly intense boxing match with sympathetic and strong characters and awesome graphics. And it never gets old. It’s the perfect series for if you want to blow off some steam.
