In the heart of Italy, the Social Welfare Agency rescues young girls from hospital beds and gives them a second chance at life using the latest in cybernetic advancements. With their artificially enhanced bodies, the girls are brainwashed and trained as assassins to carry out the dirty work of the Italian Government. Despite all the modifications, they are still just children at heart, struggling for recognition from those they love, even knowing the love they feel is manufactured. This tragic tale unfolds as these girls grapple with their emotions in an agency that treats them as nothing but ruthless killers. – My Anime List

The Nihon Review
All in all, Gunslinger Girl is a very good series bordering on greatness with only a few flaws. The slow opening may lose some, but the deep and captivating story about stolen childhoods makes more than up for it. New and exciting? Definitely. If you’re into big drama with a slight note of action, this one’s for you.
Gunslinger Girl is a phenomenal series with a great story (told episodically while focusing on specific fratellos in each), wonderful relationship dynamics and characters we come to care about. Taking the step back, it’s easy to look at it as potential child soldiers, which is prevalent in a few countries, but Gunslinger Girl takes a different approach to the story and makes it about the bonds that are formed and not about the battles and war. The series may start a little slow for some, but should you stick it out, you’ll form a bond with this series that is only seen in the closest of fratellos.
I would recommend Gunslinger Girl. It’s similar to Puella Magi Madoka Magica, but it doesn’t have such an over-the-top melodramatic feel, it’s just about the girls trying to make a good life for themselves, making the best out of their bad situation. It’s sad, but it hits more hopeful notes sometimes, especially when you see how much all the girls in this situation work together and become sort of family to each other.
Currently, the pinnacle of anime noir.
Gunslinger Girl is just one of those shows that will leave its mark on you after you sit down and watch it. The deliberately slower nature of the series combined with a lot of action and character development compliment the atmosphere very well. This was one of the hidden treasures of 2005.
My Anime List
Gunslinger Girl is sober both in content and execution, using a level of subtlety and realism that separates it from other tragic dramas such as Elfen Lied and SaiKano. The series refuses to deal in absolutes, painting everything in shades of gray rather than plain black and white. It shows tragedy and injustice but it also presents a moral dilemma which encourages the viewers to question if the sacrifices have been worth it and if the alternatives would have been any better.
As I said though, this series is more about relationships. Relationships between the girls and between their partners who they are made to think of as an older brother. The ‘brothers’ train the girls using conditioning, which is basically brainwashing and through discipline. Different ‘brothers’ use different amounts and approaches towards their girls, leaving them with radically different personalities. Jose treats Henrietta like a little sister for example, buying her presents, taking her places, and spending quality time with her, while his brother hit his Artificial girl.
All in all, I really enjoyed this series. Gunslinger Girl could have easily devolved into one of the aforementioned anime archetypes, but instead it manages to maintain a good deal of its integrity and originality. Others may be put off by its generally philosophical nature, but those with an open mind will most likely be pleasantly surprised.
In summary, Gunslinger Girl is an action title with the potential to impress, but is let down by a vague plot and dotted with sparse moments of action.

This anime is very depressing good gosh, you imagine an anime involving little girls to be warm and fuzzy. Well seeing the girls killing many, many people with their emotionless faces is very disturbing. The characters backstorys are disturbing enough, yet they still have to go through even more crap throughout the series. They get there bodys constantly opened up by doctors and there minds are always conditioned to make them even more emotionless. It is like these girls truly have no soul, or they just have been shattered into a million pieces. So this anime is very different, and contains like zero comedy or humour, so if you want somthing serious and depressing to watch, look no further.
