Simon and Kamina were born and raised in a deep, underground village, hidden from the fabled surface. Kamina is a free-spirited loose cannon bent on making a name for himself, while Simon is a timid young boy with no real aspirations. One day while excavating the earth, Simon stumbles upon a mysterious object that turns out to be the ignition key to an ancient artifact of war, which the duo dubs Lagann. Using their new weapon, Simon and Kamina fend off a surprise attack from the surface with the help of Yoko Littner, a hot-blooded redhead wielding a massive gun who wanders the world above.
In the aftermath of the battle, the sky is now in plain view, prompting Simon and Kamina to set off on a journey alongside Yoko to explore the wastelands of the surface. Soon, they join the fight against the “Beastmen,” humanoid creatures that terrorize the remnants of humanity in powerful robots called “Gunmen.” Although they face some challenges and setbacks, the trio bravely fights these new enemies alongside other survivors to reclaim the surface, while slowly unraveling a galaxy-sized mystery. – My Anime List

Anime News Network
I’ll be brief. Gurren Lagann is one of the most iconic animes in history. No fan of anime should go without giving this show a shot.
It has a little of each with a dash of drama, romance and true heartfelt honesty to it that very few series ever obtain. It’s a show that shows you happiness and sadness, and through it all you grow to love its cast, and perhaps feel a bit more optimistic about life itself.
Beta Is Dead
It’s not a perfect show, but it stands much taller than most anime I’ve ever seen and deserves a spot on your shelf next to Cowboy Bebop and FLCL. This is highly recommended and I’m afraid my words can’t do it justice.
Now if you have read all of this give yourself on the pat of the back. It is really difficult to get people to try out some animes if there not mecha fans becuase not everybody is. However this is a mecha anime that has surpassed all mecha genre’s becoming its own genre called “epic mecha genre”. Ask anybody who is a fan of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, they will easily say it is one of the most entertaining and fun animes they have ever seen. This anime is gathering so much attention its making 2 movies aswell. If you watch this entire anime in one day then you shall remember the events until you die and you will forever be going to your friends “You need to watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann now!!” This will be the first and last indepth anime review I will ever do all other anime reviews will never be as large and detailed as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Overall, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is suggested for any mech and science fiction fans out there. You will never get disappointed.
Dr Animaniac Unscripted
There is not much to say about Gurren Lagann other than…epic. This is an absolute masterpiece, achieving a godly level in all of anime. I really can’t express in many words just how amazing this anime is, so the ratings should be able to speak for themselves. I kept putting this off because I’ve never really been a fan of mecha anime, but I kept hearing such rave reviews about it and I also found out they are the same creators behind Kill La Kill, which was also amazing and is reviewed here, so I finally decided to give it a go. 27 episodes later, I’m asking myself…why did I wait so long? I had seriously been cheating myself by putting it off for as long as I had and I feel extremely foolish for underestimating it. It started off very slow, so I would only watch here and there over these last 2 months or so, but once I got to episode 17 and the second arc began, it was a game changer. I binged the rest of the episodes from that point and by the end, I was in total awe, not quite able to process the spectacular experience I had just had. This anime really portrays the unyielding human spirit and the darkness of humanity as well. It may appear to be just huge mecha bots fighting at first glance, but it goes so much deeper than that. The only thing I hated and had me tearing up was the bittersweet ending because my sappy heart really wanted a happier ending, but truthfully, looking from an objective plot standpoint, it couldn’t have ended better as everything kind of came full circle. All I have left to say is you must watch this anime, regardless of if mecha is your thing or not, because it’s an experience that you are surely to carry with you for a lifetime.
Apart from an inelegant time leap and a slightly drawn-out ending, this series packs in many high quality elements. Combining gung-ho action, comedy, ecchi, zany animation, and witty characterisation, Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann has something for everyone and is a safe bet for anybody looking for something accessible, all-round fun, and with a heart-stopping sense of adventure.
As a cynical old fart, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann appealed to me far more than I expected. Admittedly, I have enjoyed the dafter kind of mecha show before (GaoGaiGar), but I never considered this anything more than amusement for my inner child. Gurren Lagann convinced me that you don’t need quasi-real science, war drama or deeply layered plots for a good mecha show. If you get the feel right, everything else is gravy. Hugely entertaining, well-paced, occasionally smart, and actually uplifting, this anime deserves the hype. While it IS cheesy, old fashioned, simple, and flashy, it has heart. And that counts for a lot.
Milk Can Anime
Note that this is coming from someone who’s not exactly a fan of the mecha battle genre. But Gurren Lagann far exceeded my expectations and truly impressed me. It was engaging, exhilarating and I literally could not stop watching it. If your to-watch list has been stagnant for a while, why not make some space for this gem?
If you feel like having some senseless fun, Gurren Lagann will tickle your funny bones.
This modern classic gets the treatment it deserves, and the result is a must-have for fans of the series.
My Anime List
This is an anime that does not allow cold and calculating analysis. The very premise, the first episode, it doesn’t make much sense. It is a classic “love or hate”. Or you enter the atmosphere of “OW MAN, WAY TOO EPICNESS” or so says “This is not my type.” Despite the success that had (yielding promises of future projects), Gurren Lagann is not for everyone.
Above all else, Gurren Lagann is just plain fun to watch. While perhaps not the most mind-blowing anime to be released by Gainax, the combination of colorful characters and way over-the-top action makes for one of the most genuinely entertaining viewing experiences I’ve had with an anime in a long while. Its pacing, atmosphere, and themes are consistent throughout, so don’t expect any transitions to dark territory in the style of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Instead, strap in for some intense mecha action, good laughs, and positive vibes (and don’t feel bad if you find yourself marathoning episodes because you are unable to put it down).
It’s probably not for everyone. Some may be put off by the artistic styling such as the unconventional and often bizarre angles and techniques as well as the hyperkinetic feel of the animation. I, for one, couldn’t be more thrilled with all of it. I’ve seen a lot of anime and quite frankly most of it is mediocre at best. After wading through so many anime lately with virtually interchangeable story lines, art and characters, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is like a breath of fresh air.
I’m going to make this short: If you haven’t watched TTGL (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann) and are a fan of anime, do it. It is one of the one of the best anime ever made. It has an amazing story, beautiful animation, great music (Libera me from Hell comes to mind), amazing characters, and so much more.
Not everyone will enjoy every episode of the whole series, but whenever you run into a rough spot, just sit tight and stick with it for a minute. Things changed fast in the series, and a little patience will pay off with one of the best endings in anime.
Gurren Lagann is a show that should have at least one thing for a Shounen fan to enjoy about it. So, in that if you are a Shounen fan I would recommend at least trying it when given the chance, you won’t be disappointed.
Almost five-star material, but misses the mark a little, unfortunately. Add a star if you really like Nia and think I’m nuts.
If you’re looking for something realistic, then stay far and far away from this series. While I can’t say it for sure, but especially the final episodes deserve a good chance of being among the most scientifically inaccurate episodes ever. If you’re looking for epic GAR and manliness though, you should give this one a chance. The over-the-top action nearly thunders out of your screen with the bright and energetic production-values, and among the general fandom, this has become a favourite series. While I can’t share this opinion (Gurren Lagann is nowhere near the best of the previous season), it remains a nice watch.
Gurren Lagann is worth it – without a doubt. This wasn’t the smartest anime, nor the deepest, but it never tried to be. It just tried to be a good ride with robots – and even a bitter, jaded fan like me couldn’t help but fall head-over-heels for it.
Overall, I’d say the series gets an average 3 of 5 stars for me! Not bad, but not outstanding in the mech genre!
