It happened suddenly: The dead began to rise and Japan was thrown into total chaos. As these monsters begin terrorizing a high school, Takashi Kimuro is forced to kill his best friend when he gets bitten and joins the ranks of the walking dead. Vowing to protect Rei Miyamoto, the girlfriend of the man he just executed, they narrowly escape their death trap of a school, only to be greeted with a society that has already fallen. Soon, Takashi and Rei band together with other students on a journey to find their family members and uncover what caused this overwhelming pandemic. Joining them is Saeko Busujima, the beautiful president of the Kendo Club; Kouta Hirano, an otaku with a fetish for firearms; Saya Takagi, the daughter of an influential politician; and Shizuka Marikawa, their hot school nurse. But will the combined strength of these individuals be enough to conquer this undead apocalypse? – My Anime List

This is the best new show of summer 2010. It has all the elements of a fantastic anime. I’m a huge fan of zombie stories, and this show doesn’t pull any punches with it’s zombies. All the characters are original and have their own individual appeal. The storyline doesn’t sugar coat anything. It’s a great depiction of the breakdown of society. It has it T & A parts but it doesn’t go to overboard. Every episode leaves me wanting more.
Pick it up and if you don’t mind few perverted moments, enjoy this zombie killing, ass kicking piece of greatness
If you are a fan of anime then this is a great addition to your collection!
In closing, High School of the Dead was a surprisingly insightful series about the changes we go through when faced with overwhelming despair. If you are looking for a fun show with zombies, this is a good anime for you. If you are looking for some fan-service, this is a good anime for you. If you are looking for an anime that is both exciting, fun and underneath it all, profound, then this is a good anime for you. I wholeheartedly recommend High School of the Dead.
All in all, HOTD is a very odd and unique show. Its probably not going in anyone’s all time favorite lists, and will have a lot of haters, but for those with an open mind and a tolerance for its excessive fanservice, HOTD is a rollercoaster ride of zombie action. Don’t take it too seriously, and the series will definitely delight and surprise.
High School of the Dead is campy, in your face, bloody, sexy, vicious, and inappropriate but that is why it is all incredibly fun. It is the type of anime you can watch casually, yet receive a great amount of enjoyment from. It’s a series that doesn’t take itself too seriously which makes it easy to sit back and enjoy. Relax, eat something, smoke something, drink something, and laugh. Oh, and for the refined gentlemen out there, Episode Six is a must see!
Beta Is Dead
I had some other issues but really they’re mostly minor nitpicks. I loved Highschool of the Dead but unfortunately because of all the fan service involved I say that with more than a little shame. If give this show a chance with the Japanese track on and try to ignore all the crotch shots than you may find yourself enjoying things as much as I did. Sadly I can understand you not wanting to deal with this level of titillation because I could only barely tolerate it myself. If you’re a fan of zombie films you might enjoy it unless you are a hater of all things anime because this show will not change your mind and will probably just make you mad. If you’re an anime fan who is not used to zombie films this is probably a good starting point to get the feel of what the genre is all about. In a way I feel this show doesn’t deserve the high grade I’m about to award it but despite its major, major flaw but frankly I still rather watch this than the vast majority of anime out there right now.
The Yat (One) And Only Journey
I think it should be pretty similar to The Walking Dead, which is about survival after post-apocalypse when zombies have ruled the world..
Cliche and fanservice heavy. But I still love it. I love the element of survival, I love the action, and I love the boobs.
Sleepless Ronins Reviews
It is not merely a parade of animated flesh, although there are some scenes of pure fan-service. I’ll not be brazen enough to declare that falsehood. However I think the fan-service in HOTD was put to greater use than most series do.

High School of the Dead is absolutely wallowing in an adolescent obsession with tits and gore and more tits and more gore, but it is very confidently sticking to exactly what it set out to be, with surprisingly decent production values and competent pacing that at the least keep the story moving along. Frankly, you can tell whether or not this show is for you simply by looking at the cover – zombie hands reaching for a giant pair of breasts being thrust outward. If that’s what you’re looking for, this show delivers it and delivers it well. If it’s good taste, fresh ideas, or restraint you’re looking for, you’d do best to stay far, far away.
All around good anime. it contains zombies, guns, Nudity, and violence. I dont think anyone under 14 should watch the uncensored version. It is my personal favorite anime. But i am still waiting for the english dubbed season 2 of H.O.T.D.
If you’re a fan of zombies, Romero or Horror and have never watched an anime series before, this is where to start. I would highly recommend this to horror fans that aren’t into anime, anime fans that like zombies, or anyone into zombies for that matter.
My Anime List
Amidst the incredibly overwhelming fan service, there’s a lot of great stuff going on in HOTD. There’s good action, there’s some small romance, there’s comedy, there’s suspense and there’s the reality of the situation in that the characters portrayed aren’t really all that special outside their role in the group. We’ve got an assembly of people who rely on each other for survival, in a world crawling with danger. And overall, it’s a pretty good show.
The Nihon Review
HOTD is the kind of base entertainment that critics (like myself) like to decry as the downfall of civilization, but its technical creativity lets it stand at the top of that heap. HOTD fulfills its promise of brainless fun, if just barely.

Fucking Madhouse. This made me so mad that I read the manga before I was even into reading manga just to see how it ends… and surprise surprise. The manga ends on a cliffhanger as well. That sucks. This show sucks.
Overall, Amidst the incredibly overwhelming fan service, there was a lot of more great stuff going on in Highschool of the Dead. There was good action, some small romance, comedy, suspense and the reality of the situation in which the characters were portrayed. Also, It had an assembly of people who relied on each other for survival, in a world crawling with daner. But Really, I don’t mean to try and simplify a show beyond what it is, as this anime is already pretty simple. It has some zombies, some boobs and butts, Go enjoy!

‘HOTD’ has a few amazing episodes in it. At times, it can be very effective. But then, it can be so amazingly stupid, catering to horny guys rather than general audiences and abandoning logic and established rules, that all the momentum built up is thrown away. This show does this multiple times, abandoning every positive going for it and going off some random deep end, delving to the bottom seeking out the lowest common denominator. It’s borderline obscene in its excess, and panders so much that it stops being a story as much as it is softcore porn. As such, the score that this show could have earned gets cut in half without any regrets in doing so. Hopefully some studio out there will produce a serious zombie anime. Hell, even a zomedy would be fine by me. But post apocalyptic fanboy porn? No thanks, Hentai Filmworks, keep it to yourselves.
It’s worth noting that I despise ecchi content and thus probably enjoyed this series much less than some people may have, but my core problem with Highschool of the Dead is that it, underneath its flashy spectacles of zombies being torn to pieces, is unlikable and unsatisfying. The fan service, as annoying as it can be, is really only an index of the cast’s vapidity: there is no hope for characters who must be stripped naked to become remotely interesting. While Highschool of the Dead manages to avoid being boring, it leaves a foul taste in one’s mouth, the kind that makes me wonder if I’d have been better off not bothering at all.
Some of you may find yourself on the definitive line of “No, I cannot enjoy a series like this in any way,” and some of you may disagree and say “Oh but it’s all in good fun, just relax a bit.” Personally I find myself in the middle, I enjoyed the hell out of this show, the horror and gore does a splendid job of keeping you on the edge of your seat and I do try to recommend it to some horror fans but at the same time I understand where it gets everything wrong and I just can’t recommend it to every horror fan or even the everyday person. Which is the saddest part of all.
This show starts off well. Good characters, atmosphere, artwork story and all. But the show quickly becomes a generic high-school drama filled with fan-service, which isn’t something I particularity care to watch, and certainly not when it’s responsible for killing what could have been a really good show. Also, even the artwork seems to stop being as impressive as it went on. It still looks good, but they just start to do less with it.
