After destroying Earth many years ago, the alien race Gauna has been pursuing the remnants of humanity—which, having narrowly escaped, fled across the galaxy in a number of giant seed ships. In the year 3394, Nagate Tanikaze surfaces from his lifelong seclusion deep beneath the seed ship Sidonia in search of food on the upper levels, only to find himself dragged into events unfolding without his knowledge.
When the Gauna begin their assault on Sidonia, it’s up to Tanikaze—with the help of his fellow soldiers and friends Shizuka Hoshijiro, Izana Shinatose, and Yuhata Midorikawa—to defend humanity’s last hope for survival, and defeat their alien foes. Sidonia no Kishi follows Tanikaze as he discovers the world that has been above him his entire life, and becomes the hero Sidonia needs. – My Anime List

And, while many have complained about the 3D computer generated animation, this animation style greatly complements the story. The characters approach the uncanny valley and appear unnatural. And that adds perfectly to the atmosphere the show is trying to convey.
The story quality really is on pair with Attack on Titan and that means Knights of Sidonia becomes my pick of the season. I cannot wait for the 2nd season which was announced at the 1st season’s end.
I loved the show, and each week looked forward to it with building anticipation. I look forward to watching season 2 and I hope you’ll all be watching it with me. Well, not actually with me here, that could weird. You know what? Come on over, anything for my space bros. Special thanks to Underwater Subs for providing quality translation all season.
The one problem I have with Knights of Sidonia Season 1 is that in its roundabout of teen angst, battle sequences and sci-fi, it ends on a note of teen angst that descends to pure melodrama, which for me is the wrong note to end the series on. Fortunately this is alleviated by the fact that there is a Knights of Sidonia Season 2 to come. Hopefully Animatsu won’t be tardy in announcing that they have that too. Don’t be put off by the character animation. Knights of Sidonia is a great sci-fi series that is well worth picking up.
One Girl Otaku
If you have an open mind and love science-fiction, definitely. If you want to try something new, why not? Be aware though that it is quite an…intellectual kind of anime which requires attention and focus in order to truly enjoy it. This is not for brainless fun.

The story being told by the series is far from complete at the end; in fact, the stopping point is a rough one which resolves an immediate crisis but leaves a lot of plot threads dangling. Thankfully a second season has already been green-lit, with the first two episodes set to debut in November and the series then presumably airing in the Winter 2015 season. While the plot and characters may not be especially compelling or fresh, the action, visuals, and setting details are sharp enough to keep viewers coming back.
On the whole, though, Knights of Sidonia is handled quite well. It knows just how much time to allot to each plot point, even if the relevance of each of these is not abundantly clear at the point of their initial presentation. The characters are limited to a select group of major players, a few of whom do fall into the tropes of absent-minded scientist and jealous girl seeking affection of a popular guy. The supporting cast, meanwhile, is developed just enough to be decently interesting and open potential subplots for future seasons, but are not given so much time in the spotlight that the series detracts from its primary focus in weaving the story of Nagate as Sidonia’s new hero, its knight. Knights of Sidonia also does well in not stretching its multiple plotlines too thin, having a proper endgame in mind for each and every major one by the time it reaches its conclusion, though some of the less prominent story elements may linger to set the stage for another season.
OK, another show which could be considered a three-star show, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt because of some things I liked. I STILL think Nagate seriously needs to wake up and realize that the dead girl is NEVER going to be what she used to be, no matter HOW many times she comes back. And the story here is NOT complete, even though it comes to an acceptable stopping point.
The animation basically. I think if they would have used what ever effects they did on the animation during specific parts in the show rather than the entire thing it would have looked better. Don’t get me wrong though even with the strange or different animation style this show is really good. The story is a 5/5 for me, theirs just so much suspense and mystery and cool concepts i love it all. And don’t forget i don’t even like mecha genre anime and i loved this, that basically says it all!
If you can look beyond the flaws in its CG presentation, Knights of Sidonia is an utterly gripping sci-fi series that utilises its premise brilliantly.
The familiar elements of Knights of Sidonia will, no doubt, bring out sighs from long-time fans as this isn’t exactly new territory. This is the millionth giant robot anime that has come down the pipe in the last so many years but what sets this apart is the Nihei storytelling chops, world building and the decidedly unique visuals Polygon Pictures brings to the table. If you’re looking for hard sci-fi with that is far more grounded than what we usually get in anime, fan-service that is kept to a minimum and a world that is interesting enough to warrant further exploration? Sidonia is definitely worth powering through in a weekend (or longer if you so choose) as all episodes are available on Netflix right now.

Sidonia no Kishi is an amazing anime that should not simply be overlooked. The CGI, while may take some getting used to for some, is an integral part of the anime and those whom give it a chance will see why. Even for those with a dislike of mecha I’d recommend this to as the major focus on character interactions, fantastic sound and breath-taking action all put into one package makes this one of the greater Sci-fi mecha anime out there to look out for. Out of all 12 episodes there was not one that was uneventful and it continued strong from start to finish.
Con Freaks And Geeks
This show struggles in many departments, and others it does really well. Between the awkward dubbing and really stiff animation, there is redemption in its sound design, action sequences and well thought out sci-fi elements. I can recommend Knights of Sidonia if you have a netflix subscription. I ask only that you try it with an open mind. It appears there has been a second season announced so I hope they take certain things into consideration. I’m always willing to give something a second chance. Bearing everything that makes Sidonia unique and the things it does well, I’m going to give Knights of Sidonia a passing grade.
