Macross Frontier

(Last Updated On: October 18, 2017)

In a futuristic universe, humanity waged war against a race of giants known as Zentradi. Facing extinction at hands of their foes, humanity escaped to the stars. In 2059 A.D., the 25th Giant Immigration fleet, also known as the Macross Frontier, undergoes its journey towards the center of the galaxy. For the most part, life on the Macross Frontier proceeds as normal. But when famous singer Sheryl Nome visits, things go awry. Mysterious biomechanical aliens known as Vajra appear and attack, just as the citizens are busy clamoring over Sheryl. 17-year-old student mech pilot Alto Saotome joins the fray against the alien threat. While battling against a Vajra, Alto rescues a young girl named Ranka Lee. Major Ozma Lee notes Alto’s skill during his battle, and recruits him into the Strategic Military Services program. But his recruitment does not go smoothly, as the ghosts of Alto’s past come up to haunt him. – My Anime List

To top it off I’m going to look at another staple of Macross – the singing. The music in this series is the kind that gets stuck in your head for days, I was in a lecture this morning and all I had was Ranka Lee’s “Seikan Hiko” playing in my mind on a continous loop. After watching a mere 5 episodes of the series I had downloaded both O.S.T’s and have a few more single releases downloading as I write this. Move over Gurren Lagann Best Sound, I think you’ve been replaced in terms of best anime soundtrack.

Shin’s Anime Review
While steeped in the macross history, filled with little tributes to the past series, the story of Macross Frontier is strong enough to stand alone without the macross tie-in. Visually impressive in its battle scenes and with a great sense of humour (like Sheryl telling Alto who’d accidently seen her naked chest that if he distributes the optical data she’d kill him, but if he just wants to “use it for yourself just for tonight” thats ok… XD) and with its heroes slowly drawn out from the every day life into events that will shape the galaxy for generations to come, its just one of those stories you cant get enough of. The music stands alone as a thing of admiration, beauty and an unbeatable skill of composition that no-one i’ve come across can compare to, and its so well worked in to the series, in its scenes, in its very story, that it simply brings an amazing piece of work into the realm of a true timeless classic. One to watch, NOW!

All in all, Macross Frontier is a superb Sci-fi mecha series. It’s got some flaws like an unresolved Love Triangle, some character development flaws and some very varying animation, but none of those flaws detract this series from being one of the year’s best.

I have been a fan of Macross since I was a kid, seeing planes that transformed into Robots was the coolest thing and I followed all anime which were an offshoot from the original. Luckily this picked up the story where the other one ended and developed it even further, the humans were working with the Zentradi and new life is ahead of them but they face a new menace unknown to them. First off the animation in Macross Frontier is fantastic, just the perfection combination of 2-D & 3-D making it look amazing, the fight scenes fantastic, and just as the original a lot depended on the music and they did an amazing job with that. This anime is at the top and one of the best since the original was released, a must watch for all anime fans and even if you aren’t you will enjoy it.

In general, this is a most watch. You’ll probably have to be a softy to truly enjoy the ending, but if you keep up with this franchise you know what to expect and you’ll be excited to find out how it is delivered to you.

The only thing I can find wrong with Frontier is that it ends too quickly. The story is told in a very tight 25 episodes, and there were a few plot points I wish the show could have elaborated on a little further. In the end, it left me wanting more. (Much of the show references the number 25, in which the show was created to celebrate Macross’ 25th Anniversary) It stands as the shortest Macross TV series compared to the original and Macross 7. However, these were some of the most enjoyable 25 episodes I’ve seen in any anime. People new to Macross will love it, but longtime fans will get more of a treat out of this show.

The series as a whole was very well made with amazing sound effects and graphic. The love triangle between the 3 protagonists was interesting to watch as well. It was painful to see the show end, but at least it was announced that a movie is underway.

NAMSOC
After several sub-par and sometimes controversial sequels, Frontier represents a return to form for the franchise. With good characters, some solid animation and a good story, this anime has much to offer, though not without flaw. It’s probably too clever for its own good, suffers from bad pacing and slightly formulaic plot. However, compared the increasingly tired Gundam, and most of the current crop, Frontier seems a fresh and surprisingly mature mecha anime. That’s a fine achievement considering that this sequel comes more than 25 years after the original.

Overall, I just feel that the creators could have done much more with the potential of this series. They should have taken more risks, they should have made more effort to flesh out some of the neglected subplots and side-characters, instead of goofing off with Alto, Ranka and Sheryl. Macross Frontier had the potential to bake a delicious cake, and instead just came with a fried egg. And while the egg is nice and good and all, it could have been so much better.

Macross Frontier is one of the coolest Mecha I’ve came across. As much as I disliked Alto at first I think its a cool anime. I liked both female characters I think Sheryl is Sexy and Ranka is very cute. They are both good singers. They have an interesting relationship with Alto, but I didn’t like the fact that they both have a crush on him or whatever. The love story and shipping aside. Lets talk about the Mecha… Macross is breath taking. I also liked the different species in the anime Klan was my favorite. I love the music of the anime specially Ranka’s song. The plot of the anime was great it was fun and was exciting, it was tragic and sad. The anime was also full of action and kept you on the edge. Overall the anime is very good.

The Nihon Review
When push comes to shove, there is always a reason to watch Macross Frontier. If not for the namesake, then the romance. If not that, then the action. If not that, then the plot, or the music, or any number of reasons. Any one of the components that make up Macross Frontier may individually be off-putting. However, together they complement each other well enough that it is possible to hang on to one element and accept another along they way. If it is worth anything, this ended up being the first anime where I’ve ended up actively shipping.
