High school student Makoto Itou first notices Kotonoha Katsura at the start of his second semester, freshman year. Immediately, he becomes entranced by her beauty, but his bashfulness doesn’t allow him to approach her, even though they ride the same train every day. Instead, he snaps a photo of her in secret and sets it as his cell phone’s wallpaper: a charm that, if kept under wraps, would supposedly help you realize your love. However, classmate Sekai Saionji spots the picture, but instead of ratting him out, she offers to help set him up with Kotonoha—going so far as befriending her just for him. Thus, the trio begins a rather impromptu friendship. School Days follows the lives of these three teenagers as they traverse the joys and hardships that come with being a high schooler. In a story alive and brimming with romance and melancholy, the tale of these three students will linger in memory long after the momentous conclusion. – My Anime List
Based on 22 review scores:
School Days is one of those series where it definitely can be divisive with anime fans for a lot of reasons. While the cast as a whole may be unlikable, they are engaging in situations that a lot of teens end up in, whether adults want to believe it or not. I loved that the show moved past the whole playful stage and dealt with the real fun in storytelling – the relationships. They’re messy, awkward, leave a bad taste in your mouth at times and push young, emotional and sometimes unstable teenagers into horrible positions where they can’t see any outs. The show hits a lot of good things here, with appealing character designs, decent animation overall and a cast that has a lot of potential in general if they had a bit more time to really get into who they are. There’s a lot of reasons to really hate this show, but I found a whole hell of a lot of reasons to find each episode to be thrilling to watch. It’s a show that definitely should be seen just to know which side of the fence you’ll end up on.
Anime News Network
Despite its efforts to analyze and reinterpret harem series, School Days probably would have sunk into anime obscurity if not for the nature of its final episode and the circumstances surrounding it not airing. However, those analytical efforts give it a value beyond its sensationalism. If viewers find Makoto unlikable, it is because he was meant to be an object lesson, not someone that they should want to relate to. That the actions of him and the others progressively push the series away from what’s expected of harem series holds a fascination akin to watching a train wreck play out in very slow motion. Thus while the series may not seem very memorable at first, in the end it is hard to forget.
School Days is based on one of the most popular anime dating-sim games. It is famous for its various amazing and shocking endings and for being being the first eroge to be fully animated. Many fans of the game doubt that the anime will be able live up to the great game with its multiple endings and paths, but I hope/think it will not end up as just another harem show. Also, like with all popular fiction works, there is a large group of people who hate it as well, in this case for its weak and indecisive main character.
A very good anime recommended to anyone wanting to see a different side of ‘slice of life’ genre
You know when you come inside during the winter from the cold, your bundled up clothes making you feel incredibly hot when you come in, causing you to itch like crazy and feel weird? School Days is the anime equivalent of that.
The Nihon Review
The setup of School Days can be cynically compared to a Shakespearian tragedy, with the first half establishing the characters without much plot. Then, a key event happens that kicks the plot into motion, and by the end of the show, everyone has changed drastically in some way that can never be reversed. This show somehow manages to get the viewer involved. You see Kotonoha’s transformation from a shy, busty girl into a love-crazed fanatic, and feel a small chill down your spine (or, at least, I did). You see Makoto on screen and you feel like leaving the room and shooting someone. You want to slap some common sense into Sekai. You wish Setsuna could have her own series. Et cetera, et cetera. Ultimately, the characters are nothing near lovable, but the more loathing you feel for them, the better the show becomes.
Unless you’re really into soap opera level drama, and love that sort of thing with a touch of “queer” and “gore”, pass this one up, it’s really not entertaining and a waste of time.
If you have some solid emotional resolve, I think you will enjoy this series from beginning to end. Do heed the warning, however, as this is a ride you honestly may be changed by, if you take it to its conclusion.
My Anime List
School Days is a psychological anime, number one, so do not think it is about cute children playing in school and having happy days. School Days is an anime about how cheating on someone can really end up messing with their head and lives and how the human heart and mind are very fragile and how friendship is very precious and when destroyed in the worst way, it can have the worst consequences.
My Shiny Toy Robots
School Days is an ugly series. Ugly art, an ugly storyline and even uglier characters – there’s honestly very little redeeming about this show. However despite all this ugliness, there somehow manages to be something enthralling about it, culminating in the payoff of a gruesome yet somehow cathartic finale. Whether it’s by design or sheer coincidence, School Days is a brilliant inversion of the high-school romance genre that strips away all of the lovey-doveyness to leave behind something that isn’t anything other than brutal. It isn’t a pleasant or even particularly good series, but it is one hell of an experience
The story is interesting, but the characters are annoying. However, this anime teaches you about people mind and heart, as well as forbidden traits. Just go ahead! Watch this anime for moronic and insanity.
I do truly believe School Days is a masterpiece in its own right. Yes you heard me, A MASTERPIECE. Many of you may disagree with me and that’s fine but this is my review. Reviews aren’t meant to rank what animes to watch and what not to watch. Reviews are meant to share the experience and opinion the viewer felt while watching it. It may not have the most lovable characters, catchiest soundtrack, or the most extravagant animations but School Days tells the tale of what truly awaits those who step in the world of harems. Thank you for your time and I hope my idea may at least give you a slightly different view on this series and the like of it to come.
Seriously, if you were planning to watch this one: don’t. The scriptwriting and plot twists are just too forced and artificial to really form a connection, not to mention that 75% of all the scenes are incredibly annoying to watch, due to the characters being teenagers and all. While I admit that it could have been good, the scriptwriters just ruined it completely.
School Days is a carefully composed cautionary tale about the fruits of lust, and provides a clear, if a bit exaggerated, statement on the confusing physical dependence of adolescent sexual awakening.
School Days is a horrendous piece of work. Don’t be fooled by how light hearted the first half is. The characters are shallow and infuriating. In my opinion this is the worst anime ever watched as I cannot think of a title worse than this. Heck not that I’ve actually seen it but I would watch Lucky Star or any moe crap any day over School Days. Now here’s a word of advice. If you’re a fan of drama you might actually like this. Maybe this review may have you convinced to watch and see how bad this show actually is. To everyone else just stay the fuck away from this.
I still think it would be a good psycho drama or a dark highschool comedy. I bet Makoto is more hated in anime than Shinji Akari, and that’s saying alot!
To quote Charlie Brown: ‘Good grief!’ Don’t bother unless you MUST see it for the shock value.
Is it the worst anime I have seen, and I despise to think this, but I have seen one anime that is worse, but that doesn’t make this any less
