School Rumble (Season 1)

(Last Updated On: July 21, 2017)

Just the words “I love you,” and everything changes—such is the nature of the bittersweet trials of high school romance. Tenma Tsukamoto, a second year, is on a quest to confess her feelings to the boy she likes. Kenji Harima, a delinquent with a sizable reputation, is in a similar situation, as he cannot properly convey his feelings to the one he loves. Between school, friends, rivalries, and hobbies, these two will find that high school romance is no walk in the park, especially as misunderstandings further complicate their plight. School Rumble is a high-octane romantic comedy full of relatable situations, as Tenma and Kenji both try to win the hearts of those they desire. – My Anime List

There is nothing more entertaining then a very well made story, and the story in this anime is excellent. So many funny characters, and all of them revolve around Tenma. There is a depth of character that you find with all the stories that you go through. There is a love triangle (explained here) that nobody seems to be able to figure out within the group of friends, and then there are all the great fights that is going on. I can’t seem to get enough of these hilarious fights, they start for one reason and by the time they are all done they just can’t remember why they started fighting. So much entertainment in a short anime.

Yes, this series really does not rank higher than some other I have seen, but it will still continue to be a personal favorite of mine for quite a while. I enjoy rewatching the series from time to time and it is still a blast to me, even if it isn’t to par with more modern anime titles.

Sparkly Anime
While not for everyone, School Rumble is a refreshing anime that uses spectacular characters and amusing humour to bind together a show about a love triangle train-wreck that goes nowhere. If you’re just looking for an awesome comedy that’ll help you wind down and bring you fun times then this anime is for you.

Great to watch when you want to laugh, but nothing really amazing or memorable.

School Rumble is a very funny anime, it has a great love story tackling issues of unrequited love beautifully but making it funny, it knows how to be intense, it has a fantastic dub, it’s music is great, there’s a lot to love! But School Rumble has clear flaws, it has a bad ending, it relies heavily on the stupidity of its characters and it can get frustrating.

School Rumble season one is my most favourite anime so far from the ones Tom has introduced me to. I believe it is an ideal anime to watch together. Fair warning though, you may not get ALL the jokes in it due to language-based gags, or if you are fairly new when it comes to anime but don’t presume that you will end up missing out a ton. It is bursting with laughs and if you think an over-the-top take on school romances sounds fun, pick this show up!

Anime Planet
This anime was, for me, twenty-six episodes of a dream, an unadulterated escape from reality – or rather, a slightly wistful superimposition of my current reality. School Rumble has become one of those shows that holds up decently in the anime world for its solid entertainment value, but for me it has spoken volumes. It isn’t particularly witty, beautiful, or even coherent, but it is sincere, and sometimes that’s just fine.

An occasionally stumbling, but often hilarious comedy that comes highly recommended.

This is very enjoyable if you like to watch comedy genres, and don’t mind the occasional half naked scenes. There were many scenes where I was cracking up; this anime has to be the funniest I’ve seen and the most random.

What’s great is how the supporting characters give life to the series. As the season progresses, more time is focused on them and they contribute greatly for more stories. Yeah, you have the typical girl-obsessed pervert, the tomboy, the rich blonde girl…but you also have the turtle-loving loner, the quiet girl who may be an international assassin during summer vacation, the shy girl who for some reason has hulk-like strength, and the kid who dreams of being the top bully at the school but is too much of a wimp/has too much bad luck to actually do it. And those are just a few characters out of many. Having a huge cast of varied characters is what made “The Simpsons” popular, and it works for “School Rumble.”

The Nihon Review
School Rumble is as good aesthetically as it is funny. Unfortunately the price it paid for its humour was a largely unfinished story with numerous unresolved characters. Considering its immense popularity and the incomplete nature of its story, it would hardly surprise me if we saw a sequel in the not too distant future.

However in the end, even with all that said, the anime is still only rated as “good” I can understand why people might not like School Rumble all that much, they migh compare it to such animes like Azumanga Daioh because they think as a classic it is better. And in all fairness that might be true, however this anime was truly the personification of a highschool anime for me, there was no evil villians or world apocolyptic events on the horizen it was just the daily activies of all these highschool students. As their struggle to become adults and be more mature they all discover somthing new about themselves, just like we did in highschool.
