With the introduction of strict new morality laws, Japan has become a nation cleansed of all that is obscene and impure. By monitoring citizens using special devices worn around their necks, authorities have taken extreme measures to ensure that society remains chaste.
In this world of sexual suppression, Tanukichi Okuma—son of an infamous terrorist who opposed the chastity laws—has just entered high school, offering his help to the student council in order to get close to president Anna Nishikinomiya, his childhood friend and crush. Little does he know that the vice president Ayame Kajou has a secret identity: Blue Snow, a masked criminal dedicated to spreading lewd material amongst the sheltered public—and Tanukichi has caught the girl’s interest due to his father’s notoriety.
Soon, Tanukichi is dragged into joining her organization called SOX, where he is forced to spread obscene propaganda, helping to launch an assault against the government’s oppressive rule. With their school set as the first point of attack, Tanukichi will have to do the unthinkable when he realizes that their primary target is the person he admires most. – My Anime List
Based on 16 review scores:
There is nothing I can say negative about this series. I love the concept of a world of decency being fought by obscenity. I feel that in 1985, Tipper Gore wanted that for this country. The characters on this anime are just so full of emotion and energy. The passion is being shown thru both the look and dialogue of the show. I did not expect this anime to pack such an odd sense of humor. I really did not expect this anime to have that humor appeal to me. I found myself laughing, and really enthralled in this series. The only negative is that, it was not longer. I did not want this show to stop. In all the anime series I have reviewed so far, this is the best. This is that series that can make non anime fans curious. The humor ranges from dark to crude to just plain silly. The script was wonderfully written and executed perfectly. This is the first anime I can remember since the original Heavy Metal, that I was truly floored by what I watched and witnessed. The story has so much personality and originality to it. You cannot go wrong once you start watching. The animation is top notch. This is that show that does not feel like an anime as much as it feels like an actual movie. The fight over good and bad will always go on. The fight over decency and vulgarity, will always go on as well. This film makes that fight seem so much more enthralling and fun. This blu ray is so highly recommended.
By far one of the best anime of the year. I highly recommend it to everyone.
Scully Nerd Reviews
Shimoneta creates an interesting dystopian society of people and one where I truly hope that SOX and the other Ero-terrorist win in. The story takes a fresh new approach in how certain fan service ideas are presented but at the same time there’s actually a great underline message to be found buried underneath the mountain of obscenities. Everything isn’t perfect especially when you meet the stories main bad guy and his obsession with cloth undergarments, they’re used by the way. Still, if you can get past the one or two extremely obscene moments then you will be laughing your way all the way through.
Dr Animaniac Unscripted
his series was one that I kind of just watched because it seemed interesting and it was, as well as utterly ridiculous. There really wasn’t too much of an intensive plot and this was more or less just pure comedy with naughty themes. I enjoyed this anime, but don’t really need nor care for a second season.
The Anime Newbie
My only concern is that the story wont reach the deep level that it really deserves . When you think about it, this is a very important subject: What are the consequences of a sexually repressed society? So far the story is slowly getting more and more intense I just hope it does reach its orgasm…I mean climax before the season is finished.
It’s a cool show, so go watch it. There’s dirty jokes, cute girls, fun action scenes, an amazing theme song made specifically for the show, and some decent social commentary on why a society should never try to censor basic human desires and repress them, because you might end up with a world as wacky and weird as this one.

In the end, SHIMONETA is a series best appreciated if it can be taken for exactly what it is on the surface: a rollicking ride of raunchy, twisted fun. While it does engage in some satire and social commentary, these ultimately seem more like excuses for setting up the show this way rather than actual focal points. It definitely assaults all boundaries of good tastes, to the point that even the most tolerant viewers may find objectionable or at least off-putting content in it, but some good characters and genuinely funny scenes carry it through.
Unleash The Anime
Shimoneta is a one of a kind show. Seriously I can’t really think of anything that remotely comes close to being like this show in terms of a story aspect. The characters really emphasize what this show is about and can really make you laugh. Or if you’re like the people who passed that law you probably won’t last 10 minutes into the show. I can say that Shimoneta wasn’t the best show I’ve seen by far but it was one of the most interesting ones I’ve seen and I found myself laughing and enjoying it. I recommend Shimoneta for anyone that just wants to cut loose with some raunchy comedy or those that want something that’s out of the ordinary.
All in all, give Shimoneta a watch and create an idea for yourself. Just keep this in mind, this is definitely not a kid’s show. They will not understand anything that happens and it’s too mature for them. And remember, at least it’s not Umaru!
Ultimately I had a lot of fun with Shimoneta, and was less repulsed by the non-consensual jokes that straddled that fine line between okay and not okay, than other viewers were.
Overall Shimoneta is a very funny light hearted anime that really doesn’t take itself too seriously but has enough going for it, other than an ecchi tag, to keep you interested and watching. Be warned this anime isn’t for everyone and you’ll still be needing an explanation to anyone who walks in on you watching it, but it was fun, funny and definitely deserves a watch if you have nothing else on your list of shows to see and are looking for something completely different.

Whilst I thought the approach I originally named of concentrating on the humour rather than the ecchi was a pleasant change, the execution of this was in the end pretty poor. Shimoneta lacks in far too many areas and ends up falling well short of any of the three shows I named near the start. This is an average comedy and is therefore probably not worth your time. The cast is average, the animation is average and the humour is far too hit and miss to be anything special. I’m going to have to say avoid this one unless you really enjoy stuff such as South Park as beyond its unique theme, which even then is hardly a developed political view, this has nothing new to offer. I didn’t mention it either but there’s literally a borderline rape scene in this show so have fun with that!
Do I think that it’s funny, surprisingly progressive in its gender politics (most of the time), salient, and home to a cast of good characters? Yes. Do I also think that the show sometimes manages to over-highlight the things it hopes to criticize, some of these things being rather messed up? And do I sometimes also think it’s trash? Yes. And ultimately, you shouldn’t bother with this if you don’t have a taste for dirty jokes
As bad as the story is the characters may grow on you. I watched three extra episodes of this anime 1 to see if it would start to make sense since it is my philosophy to never give up on an anime too soon, and 2 some of the characters were really lovable. Especially Anna and her ridiculous inability to indentify subliminal messages (another element of comedy to be found in this anime)
Shimoseka is a comedy about a world without dirty jokes, or more like a world where if you tell dirty jokes you get punished. The main characters of the anime rebel against those rule thus they are faced with many funny and ridiculous situations. The anime was pretty funny specially the censoring whenever they are about to say something funny. The characters are quite interesting specially the artist. The main plot of the anime was a little weak. I don’t think the writers themselves knew where they were going with it. It is about freedom but… I don’t know it wasn’t displayed in an inspiring way I guess. I mean specially with the fact that its about dirty jokes… I mean who cares about that! Nevertheless the anime was quite funny.
