The Future Diary

(Last Updated On: August 21, 2017)

Lonely high school student, Yukiteru Amano, spends his days writing a diary on his cellphone, while conversing with his two seemingly imaginary friends Deus Ex Machina, who is the god of time and space, and Murmur, the god’s servant. Revealing himself to be an actual entity, Deus grants Yukiteru a “Random Diary,” which shows highly descriptive entries based on the future and forces him into a bloody battle royale with 11 other holders of similarly powerful future diaries. With the last person standing designated as the new god of time and space, Yukiteru must find and kill the other 11 in order to survive. He reluctantly teams up with his obsessive stalker Yuno Gasai (who also possesses such a diary), and she takes it upon herself to ensure his safety. But there’s more to the girl than meets the eye, as she might have other plans for her unrequited love… – My Anime List

The anime is fascinatingly gory and addresses some serious issues, including rape, child abuse, bad parenting and cold-blooded murderers. The show features plenty of action and acomplicatted story filled with plot twists that will keep you watching non-stop.

The Future Diary is a modern classic, and it’s so much fun to watch. Once I was into it I was watching about seven episodes at a time, and I loved every second of it. It’s thematically ambitious and explores character relationships in a unique and compelling way. With a great narrative, awesome supporting cast, and satisfying ending, it’s a superb show all round, and quite possibly the best in its genre.

This is an pretty awesome anime, awesome concept, good action ,good characters and some good twists for good measure I can’t recommend this anime enough it’s pretty good. And please watch the OVA in order to get the true ending and closure and if you can’t get enough watch Mirai Nikki Another World it doesn’t have the charm of the original but it’s okay.To me Future Diary is (until now ) one of the best animes that I’ve ever seen it’s action packed,a gore fest ,a love story and some pretty good SF it’s awesome and I love it.

Overall, The Future Diary is f**ked up, in a good way. It leaves an impression like you just watched the dark side of humanity. Needless to say, this show is demented and bloody, so if that is not your thing, turn away now. If you are intrigued and you are OK with the blood and dark overtone, I recommend this show to you without any doubt. You will absolutely love the show.

In the end, this does reward, even though it takes a while to get there. Mirai Nikki’s biggest problem is that it stumbles on for a good 10 episodes in uninteresting fights, challenges and characters, and it’s not even for the sake of build-up either. At one point it just decides to make its character arcs longer and actually use some character development effecitvely, and that’s where it becomes quite an entertaining ride. The ending is a bit weird, but heck, this show at least doesn’t skimp on entertainment value.

THEM Anime
Even with all its flaws, I read the manga twice and still watched every episode of the show without a moment’s hesitation. That has to count for something. Take away a star if you can’t stand Yuki or Yuno and take away another if plot holes really bother you.

The transition into the real action of the story almost made me never finish it-and that’s a big deal. After a while, in the middle, you’re like “He is going to kill them all. He is going to win…this is so boring” but after like 5 episodes you get into Yuno’s true identity and you get interested again. The story is wonderful-even though Yukiteru gets with Yuno…a mass murderer, obsessed yandere that tortured him for a good while before they got together. Literally – but it had a few flaws in delivery.

Future Diary is one heck of a ride for an anime, with each episode leaving you at the edge of your seat, desperate for more. With fantastic characters, an excellent plot and a soundtrack that will have you scouring through Spotify or YouTube for more, Future Diary is certainly one of my favourite animes. Keep an open mind as you sit through the first few episodes and you’ll be pleasantly delighted, often surprised and/or horrified and in the end completely satisfied.

This show is exciting and suspenseful and strays from many of the stereotypical aspects of high school age characters. It’s bizarre without being alienating, and it will keep your heart pounding from beginning to end.

While the story is a bit weak and drags at points, the diverse and lively cast of real believable characters really made this anime something special. The premise itself of Future Diaries is very original and makes this a unique experience. Again, this anime is graphic and requires mature audiences that can handle these tones, which I find regrettable. Unfortunately because of the mature content, the United States distribution is far smaller than it deserves to be.

My Anime List
In conclusion, Mirai Nikki is a huge disappointment. Its messy story and weak characters are simply not fit for the genre it belongs to. Even if the art was OK, even if the soundtrack was great, even if the anime has its moments and holds the potential to be enjoyable should one ignore the writing issues, it simply does not live up to the hype. I’m probably gonna get lynched by its fanbase; however, I don’t really care. I’m done. I needed to get this out of my system, and there it is.

The anime was good overall, but I have expected better. I enjoyed watching every single episode, and the amount of fan service was acceptable and was not over-added to the series. The concept of the story is kind of mixed. You can find some Steins;Gate patterns, and also some Shounen patterns. A good anime if you do not have any better choices.

My Reviewer
Mirai Nikki is fun, and it has some great production values to it, great animation, unremitting on the violence, but it’s hardly a classic of the genre, and not an essential anime. Which is good for my wallet, as I’ve already imported anime from the US and Australia because of Kazé’s approach to subtitling, and Mirai Nikki’s subtitles are another instance where this may as well be a dub only release. Waiting for the second half of the show is going to be a pain too.

You really do not need to have any prior experience of watching anime to understand this one. If you are a fan of horror or the suspense/thriller genre in general, you will probably enjoy the show, but do not expect anything really intellectually stimulating or spectacular from it.

I do have to say thought that towards the end, the plot goes quite off the rails and if you struggle with concepts of alternate dimensions, time travel and the like then you will probably get quite lost.

The Nihon Review
If you were to ask me what the series is about, I would say: “Yuno.” If you were to ask me what the series is really about, I would say: “Well, nothing really, but Yuno is pretty interesting.” Therein lies the problem with the show; there are no underlying themes or grand ideas guiding the narrative. Future Diary is just a hodgepodge of amusing events that occur. Some events are so off-kilter and extravagant that they come across as interesting, but overall they have no sense of meaning or real sense of direction. Watch the first few episodes to see a prototype of a really cool show, then skip the rest because the whole thing falls apart.

Perhaps I missed something in The Future Diary. The show definitely touched on some interesting themes about growing up and whether one should go to any lengths for love. Even so, I feel this anime is not worth watching. Though it has a decent first third, the remaining portion of the series is downright terrible at the worst of times, and barely watchable at best.

I know that a lot of people may not like this review due to its negativity and how I barely found any positives in this anime. I’m not going to lie; there were moments within the show that I did like. Whenever the show doesn’t take itself all that seriously and just had fun with its over-the-top story, I enjoyed myself a lot. However, this edgy ignorance makes this show detestable in my eyes, and its unlikable main characters do nothing to help that. This makes my overall enjoyment incredibly low, as whenever I look back at this show I feel dirty. I give Future Diary a 1 out of 5 stars, and a recommendation to never check it out. However, if you like the show, I have nothing against you. Continue to love it, like it, hate it, or feel however you want to feel about it. Like always, it is up to you to decide your own opinions.
