Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid

(Last Updated On: November 29, 2017)

Naïve 16-year-old Mamori Tokonome is accustomed to being teased at school for having an unfortunate surname that can also be read as “virgin.” However, young Mamori will soon have to get used to being teased in other ways… Kidnapped during gym class, Mamori wakes up only to find herself stranded and under attack on the exotic island of Mermaid. Luckily, enigmatic fellow castaway Mirei Shikishima knows exactly how to take the lead—through a passionate kiss, Mirei unleashes Mamori’s Exter transformation abilities, turning the innocent red-head into a battle-ready cutlass through the power of arousal. The duo will need to tap into that power as Mermaid Island is full of potential friends and foes: Charlotte, the sadistic Liberator of an Exter harem; the gluttonous and crafty Meifon; the mysterious but charismatic Akira Hiiragi; and the erotic biker duo Lady Lady. Mamori and Mirei’s powerful and intimate embrace is the only way for the pair to ensure their survival on this scandalous island. – My Anime List

I know, what am I even doing giving this a 8/10, right? Seriously, I don’t know either. All I can say is that I was looking forward to seeing a new episode every Saturday, so I guess no matter how hollow the plot or how ridiculously big the boobs, I just can’t help but love this. As the yuri fan that I am, this was like a dream coming true – a very ecchi dream, but nonetheless a good one. And I sure as hell hope that there is going to be another season. Knowing that there are 5 artificial islands, there is enough material left to do at least 4 more~

Overall, the animated side of the Valkyrie Drive franchise has very little to offer anyone who isn’t enamored of heavy fan service series, especially those which focus on (male-oriented) yuri content and enormous racks. It also has objectionable content in it of a type and degree that is typical for series of its ilk. Basically, if you find the Queen’s Blade and/or The Qwaser of Stigmata franchises to be at least tolerable then there is a good chance that this will work for you, too, although the story quality and character development here are decidedly lesser. Otherwise if you want to see this story concept done much better in the long run, check out Cross Ange instead.

A fan service show with a plethora of ecchi content that eventually uses its diverse and likable characters to create an interesting story by the show’s end.

So the only thing, which differentiates this show form an usual Hentai-porn is that the genitalia are not shown. Though Japan censors all genitalia even in Hentai-porn, so id say there actually is absolutely no difference between them.

As a fan of competently done lewd yuri, I quite enjoyed this series in the basest way imaginable; and really, given what its intentions are, that’s just about all that I needed.

Something for every healthy pervert in this very driven fan service series.

Overall, this is good to kill time, but it isn’t an amazing watch by any stretch of the imagination. However, if you take it for what it is (and it’s quite honest about not being anything more than that) then you should be able to sit through it for the experience.

I’m all for dumb lewd fanservice anime, but it still has to be fun to watch. Valkyrie Drive Mermaid just isn’t compelling in any way, and stretched out over 12 episodes it’s a chore to slog through this show to get to the naughty action it’s trading on. For the lewdness on offer you may as well save yourself some time and hit up an actual hentai anime. Either way it’s going to be just as awkward to explain when somebody walks into the room while you’re watching, so why not go all in? And in any case it’s probably easier to explain two cartoon characters banging instead of having to explain two cartoons banging AND why one of them came and turned into a sword, right?

It was also boring. We barely paid attention to it while watching it. Even with the low standards we have in Classy this is near the bottom of the barrel, even with such awful contenders as Queen’s Blade Rebellion, Oreimo, Walkure Romanze, World Break, Senran Kagura, Triage X, etc., etc.
