Reeling from his crushing defeat at the Grand Prix Finale, Yuuri Katsuki, once Japan’s most promising figure skater, returns to his family home to assess his options for the future. At age 23, Yuuri’s window for success in skating is closing rapidly, and his love of pork cutlets and aptitude for gaining weight are not helping either.
However, Yuuri finds himself in the spotlight when a video of him performing a routine previously executed by five-time world champion, Victor Nikiforov, suddenly goes viral. In fact, Victor himself abruptly appears at Yuuri’s house and offers to be his mentor. As one of his biggest fans, Yuuri eagerly accepts, kicking off his journey to make it back onto the world stage. But the competition is fierce, as the rising star from Russia, Yuri Plisetsky, is relentlessly determined to defeat Yuuri and win back Victor’s tutelage. – My Anime List

I am so pleased with how this show is going. Sadly, some feel there is still room for this show to end up as just queer bait. That’s because the burden of proof for gay relationships in media is very high, whereas if this was a girl and guy we wouldn’t ever be doubting the relationship. That said, there is alot more evidence that it’s an actual gay romance. In fact, I’m not gonna fear the show ending as queer bait anymore. I have full confidence in the creators of this show.
I really love how this anime had such an interesting and original plot. I recommend Yuri!!! on Ice because it’s a mix of sports anime and comedy.
As a competitive figure skater myself, I came into this show expecting it to not be as accurate or understanding of the sport. However the animation is not only beautiful but it creatively captures the art of figure skating. I found that the animation was fairly accurate to actual figure skating, and a lot of detail was put into it. I also really enjoy the characters, especially Yuri. He is relatable and understandable, and over all adorable! I cant wait to see how this anime turns out.
Yuri!!! On ICE is an ambitious project, so far juggling a variety of moods and feelings with the grace of its talented ice skating characters. This premiere comes roaring out the gate with impressive technical aspects on every level and just the right amount of levity in its writing to keep things impactful without becoming overbearing – warm and inviting, while also promising rewarding drama. Time will tell if the production can stay this engaging, but for now at least there seems to be plenty to look forward to.
Watched the first 3 episodes and instantly captivated. The main charecter is likeable and the skating details are so well done. I love the way they animate the routines and how real the atmosphere of the competitions is. I don’t really watch sports animes but I love this. SO pumped to watch more. The chemistry between Yuri and Victor is so captivating!

A surprisingly phenomenal anime with deep emotional themes and three-dimensional, rich, and colorful characters.
My Anime List
The anime combines a lot of different animation styles, sometimes really basic “stuff” and then with a lot of “specialties”.
I think you should give it a try, the first episode and then decide for yourself.
As a final impression, I am glad that we have this show. Yuri on Ice stands out in more than one way and if anything, its unexpected mainstream appeal means that Sayo Yamamoto will have more artistic control over her next project, which is a huge bless for everyone. As for the show, they’re not quite there to make history yet, but there’s no denying that Yuri on Ice is a special show.

After years of being a fan of all these sports anime like Free!, Haikyu!!, Kuroko’s Basketball, DAYS, All Out!!, Cheer Boys!!, Yowamushi Pedal, Prince of Stride and so on, it would be great not to have to simply imply the characters are gay, but say that they definitely are, and that they love each other, no matter what hardships they may face.
Despite what anyone may think that this is focused on BL, it’s not. There’s no denying the BL hints, but, they’re as platonic and pure as one could get. Story wise, it was amazingly emotional. IF you like the kind of anime that’ll tug at your heart, this one’s most definitely recommended. FYI, Yuri in the title does not refer to shoujo-ai. It’s the protagonist’s name.
